We’re opening our new lounge bar on Saturday 10 November.
The doors will open at 7pm.
As you might have already heard, our new lounge bar will be called Whelahans.
That name has been chosen to honour Hibernian’s founding captain, Michael Whelahan.
It was Michael Whelahan who chose the name Hibernian for our football club.
As captain he lifted the football club’s first silverware – the Edinburgh Association Trophy in 1879.
He went on to become President of Hibs, a position he held when the Scottish Cup was first brought back to Leith in 1887.
In the same role he saw Hibs crowned ‘unofficial world champions’ when they beat Preston North End.
That ‘world championship’ game was played at the first Hibernian Park – just off Easter Road on the site of what is now The Hibs Supporters Club.
Michael Whelahan’s great, great, great, grand nephew also captained the football club. His name was Pat Stanton.
By choosing Whelahans we’re celebrating our shared Hibernian heritage and giving our members and the Leith community a modern bar for their comfort and enjoyment.
We look forward to welcoming you at Whelahans from Friday 2 November.
We’ll be sharing more information on our opening night soon.
